This short chapter of or 9 part series of IMBA’s “Building Mountain Bike Trails” glances over the use of rock armoring to prevent trail erosion.

If you are lucky enough to have access to rock, then this technique is a reliable way to keep a trail tread hard and resistant to erosion caused by bike tires, and also allows a trail tread to be raised above wet or soft terrain.

Rock armoring is a lot of work, but can be an ideal solution in certain situations.  For more information, pick up a copy of IMBA’s Trail Solutions Book, in which their is a whole chapter dedicated to the use of rock armoring on trails.
